About Ankara Esenboga Airport
Ankara Esenboga (ESB) Airport is a Turkish
international airport situated 28 km (17 mi) away from
Ankara, the city-capital. In 2009, it served 6,085,126
passengers, thus being ranked 5th concerning the total
passenger traffic and 7th concerning the international
traffic handled in the country. The name Esenboga is a
toponym, designating the village of Esenboga, which
means “healthy bull”.
In terms of its reputation, in 2009 it received the
award for the best European airport by the Airport
Council International, being the first time when a
Turkish airport managed to obtain such an award. Among
the qualities that made the airport deserve this award
it is worth mentioning the fact that it secures 25%
energy savings stemming by recycling the exhaust gases
in order to power its air conditioning plants.
The airport features a combined domestic and
international terminal, inaugurated in 2006, after two
years of construction works. This new terminal has a
capacity of 10,000,000 passengers per year and 105
check-in desks. As for the access to and from the
airport towards the city, the road between Esenboga and
Ankara was enlarged in 2006, significantly decreasing
the driving time between these two points of connection.
